Remembered now one more thing:

Is it not so that we in Norway have our own special UMC? Thinks to remember that it was said that our UMC could easily be used throughout Europe, but the UMC from other countries would not work in Norway, or whether it was that it would not work everywhere in Norway? Can not locate this, so if anyone else remembers this better or find it?

Might be good to be aware of this before you get here so you are not totally dependent on superchargers. :p

He'll be an interesting guinea pig for testing this in real life conditions. :-)

Tesla does claim that the UMCs delivered outside Norway will not work in Norway.

I don't really understand why, and don't really believe his UMC won't work here. Norway has the same voltage and frequency as in the rest of Europe, only the grounding is kinda different on one-phase. I can't see why there should be any difference charging with a European UMC using either of the three adapters schuko, blue one-phase or red 400V three-phase in Norway or the rest of Europe. I can't see how the European UMC can even detect any difference between Norwegian electricity and EU electricity on these three types of sockets. Even US Teslas are reported to charge just fine here on 230V one-phase.

Obviously, the UMC adapter for swiss sockets will be of no use to him outside Switzerland. He needs a schuko adapter for his UMC (same type socket as Germany), and preferably a blue and red adapter as well for higher speed charging where such sockets are available.

I suspect the Norwegian UMC has some sort of provision for Norwegian 230V three-phase (IT) in addition to standard European 400V three-phase (TN). Maybe something which will switched on or announced later on.

I hope he'll tell us how charging worked out during/after his trip.

Thank you all very much for your helpful and inspiring answers to my post.

Of course it would be great if the SCs have already started operating, when I arrive in Norway next Monday, but thanks to the very helpful advice, I should be able to get the most out of my vacation anyway.

Because I've just taken delivery of my Model S, I'm struggling to find time to write back.

I will post pictures of my charging adapters later.

Thanks

Sven

fredag: It might be that the Euro UMC expects protective earth (PE) and neutral (N) to be shorted, i.e. that there is zero potential between them. In an IT network, there is no neutral. We have two lives, none of them connected to ground (obviously).

If the Euro UMC expects to see zero voltage and resistance between one of the pins and PE, then many Norwegian schuko outlets will not work.

Looks like you're set for norway.
1phase 32 A 230Volts is the 'norwegian standard'.
You also have a type2Mode3 cable, and a charging station for it.

I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect you might run into trouble with our antiquated "isolated terra" grounding system. You might want to verify with crohm that it's able to handle 230 V single phase from L1, L2, PE in addition to L1, N, PE.

You might also want to contact Tesla to check whether the EU-spec UMC will handle IT grounding - I don't think it will. Maybe they can provide you with a Norwegian UMC for the duration of your stay? Or maybe there's a hidden switch or something.

The south-western part of Norway has EU-type electricity, 400 V TN. Shopping centers and other large buildings also usually have a 400 V system, so it's not impossible to get at, but there's currently so few publicly available 400 V charge points that I'd be hesitant to go to Norway right now without a UMC for IT power grids.

Maybe someone on the forum has a 400 V outlet?

I'd be happy to help you out if I had gotten my MS yet, but I haven't.

Some very Norwegian things to see:

Langfoss has been rated as one of the ten most beautiful waterfalls in the world by CNN Travel. There's a footpath along the waterfall up to the top, too.
http://www.worldwaterfalldatabase.com/waterfall/Langfoss-427/
E134 from Haukeliseter Fjellstue (hotel) to Haugesund offers lots of beautiful scenery and takes you right next to Langfoss (or sometimes more like right through it, depending on the weather).

Vøringsfossen is another very impressive waterfall, with a hotel right next to it. You'll get to see it before they shut it off for winter 15. September, to make hydro power out of it when the tourists have gone home... It's in the bottom of the Hardanger fjord, which is very much worth seeing too.

http://www.fossli-hotel.com/, hotel built approx 1880 right next to Vøringsfossen

Lysefjorden is another extremely spectacular fjord in southwestern Norway. At Preikestolen (named after the pulpit where the priest stands while preaching in the church) you can sit on the edge and dangle your feet above the 600+ m vertical drop

http://www.khm.uio.no/besok-oss/vikingskipshuset/ The Viking Ship Museum, with real 1200 years old viking ships
The view over Oslo from the top of the Holmenkollen ski jump is very nice.

Bergen is a beautiful city, squeezed in between the sea and steep mountains.

I should mention Lofoten and Northern Norway too. Particularly during autumn and spring Northern Norway is very beautiful due to the very long sunsets/sunrises and the spectacular nature. The only problem is that the round trip from Oslo is about 3600 km...

Did Tesla loan you a Norwegian UMC?

The red note in Norwegian explaining that the car is electric is only needed for parking on municipal parking spaces. You have to pay on private parking spaces (QPark, Europark, Centerpark, etc).

Municipal parking spaces are usually signposted with a blue P traffic sign, and you also see on the contact information on the parking ticket machine that it's operated by some "kommune" (municipality in Norwegian).

Welcome,

You have received lots of good advice. You could have a look at the pulpit rock. On the way there you will be passing Sandnes. Send me a message on the forum and I can give you a sailing trip on the fjord - that's what Norway i about!
