How is the Ioniq 5 as a family car?

Hi there! Apologies for the English, but my Norwegian really isn't up to snuff for this kind of thing  ;)

I currently drive a 2020 Hyundai Kona and really like it, however my wife and I are expecting our second child in January (the first one will be two-and-a-half by then) and it's quite clear we're going need to upgrade to something bigger in order to fit everyone and their stuff (+a dog) as we take several frequent trips to Bergen every couple months to visit family.

We went for a test drive earlier this week and we're suitably impressed with the car. It's close enough to the Kona that it feels familiar, but updated enough that it feels far fancier. Plus, there's oodles of extra space compared to our (relatively) petite Kona.

Even with the clearly extra room in the back for car seats and larger boots for strollers, I'd still love to hear from other owners in Norway about how practical it is as a car for a family with two small children (and a small dog)?

Anyone with experience to share?

We had the Ioniq 5 for a while and it was overall very good. I like the design and it has a lot of practical solutions.
Comfortable, silent and handles uneven surface very well. If you`re looking for a comfortable family car the Ioniq 5 is great.

In this segment it`s the fastest charging EV. We saw peak around 230kW and 180kW average from 5-80% at a fast charger. Now with preheating of the battery it should perform well in winter aswell.

Switching driving modes from the steeringwheel was practical. Same with paddle shift of regen level to suit driving conditions.

All in all I would strongly recommend it.

We sold ours for the following reasons;
1. I swapped it for a cheaper car (ID4 GTX) and the used car prices when I sold was very good.
2. The headlights are not great. Cornering lights are non present and the headlights are not adaptive (no turning in winding roads, no matrix).
3. The infotainment is OK, but not the best. Android Auto was not wireless, wich was a bit of a letdown. Not sure if that`s been fixed or if it`s wireless for Carplay. The driver screen is a bit "information overload", but OK.
4. Some 12V issues. Hyundai still seems to not be in control of charging 12V in their EVs.
5. The self drive function was not great. I appreciate how it works in my current car, with assistance on long journeys while allowing for driver interaction without turning off. Not seemless engage/disengage.

It`s worth mentioning that the weight capacity for passengers and luggage is a bit limited, but no problem for us, a family of four.

Thanks for the response! For some reason I didn't get a notification that you'd replied, and we've since gone ahead and purchased the car - a 2023 Premium RWD - and the dealership even gave us a pretty fair trade-in amount on the Kona. Just waiting on it to get transported from Bergen to Stavanger as they didn't have the colour we wanted in stock here. To be fair, there aren't a whole lot of options unless you really like grey -- even the blue and green are kind of grey haha.

We ended up getting to test drive it again for a weekend which basically sold us on the car. Everything you mentioned about practicality is true and it's such a pleasure to drive (although we test drove the AWD, so I guess I'll find out soon enough how different the RWD is in practice).

The fact that we could fit two car seats and still have the dog sit between them without too much issue was a game changer. And loading two strollers, plus a large suitcase into the boot just would never be possible in the Kona. We had also checked out the the Model Y and the ID Buzz, but the trade-in Hyundai have us was well and above what VW and Tesla could offer, and we honestly felt like the Ioniq was the right car for us.

Shame to hear about the cornering lights, that's something I love and take for granted in the Kona. And I'm slightly concerned about a lack of rear windshield wiper - it didn't rain when we had the loaner so couldn't test how good/bad it might be.

Coming from a Hyundai already, I'm pretty used to the infotainment and self-driving quirks so neither really bothered me. In fact, it made the car feel familiar but upgraded which is nice.

Thanks for the info regardless, am looking forward to it arriving and getting better acquainted with it.

I have the I5, and my brother has VW ID4.
Both are good cars. The impression is when we are 4 adults in the car, those in the back seat enjoys the Hyundai over the ID 4 because they have more room.

I myself is a little dissapointed about the cargo room on the I5, think it's a little small. Feels a little smaller than the cargo space of the VW eGolf I had before. Put in the same things I have for work, and it wasn't much extra room than What I had in the eGolf. Most of it is because the eGolf had higher between the shelf and the floor of the cargospace.
